Another Friday, another Feature! This week we’ll be featuring Mahalia!

Mahalia is a member of our hip-hop group, bringing her outside expertise into our cyphers and has taken on Waacking and Voguing! Pre-Covid, Mahalia started to teach and take on choreographing routines during our hip-hop program! She loves that youths are able to take part in teaching and says that is a reason why Antyx stands out from other dance classes.

Her favourite routine that she’s performed with Antyx was during Multicultural Day where the group performed for a large audience on stage and she performed a duet with Heather, another Antyx youth. While it was intimidating, she crushed it! Her advice for anyone joining Antyx’s hip-hip group and the cypher is to just try every style and be open minded! It’s important to remember that you’re all there for the same reasons.

“Take all the opportunities!”

When we asked Mahalia what Antyx meant to her, she said “Community”. She explained that Dwight and Bryan, Antyx facilitators, create an environment where people know they’re cared for and develop communication skills and learn from others. Together they’ve become a family!

Outside of Antyx, Mahalia also ventures in watercolour painting! She enjoys painting landscapes and learns new techniques through a school art class and watches how-to videos in her spare time! She’s been keeping busy during quarantine expanding her art and taking advantage of other free online dance classes!

We can’t wait to see what she has to teach our youths when we come together in person!
