Youth Arts Action

I joined Antyx as a practicum student in January 2021, and one of the programs I had the privilege of helping facilitate was YAAN (Youth Arts Action North). This is a visual arts after-school program for teens in Calgary. Naturally, with our current global situation, it has all been done online over Zoom since I began. Nonetheless, it has been a very fun and inspiring time!

Since January, we have covered art topics such as texture, value, portraits, faces, hair, collaging, abstract, fauvism, and still life. A typical evening at online YAAN begins with a “Check-In” so that any new people can be introduced and get to know the group, and to start the conversation flowing. We usually play a game and do a quick stretch to have some fun and get settled. This is followed by a discussion of our topic or theme for the evening, some simple practice warm-ups, and then it is time to do art! My favourite part is at the end, where everyone shows off their art. I learn just as much from the youth and their skills as I do from the other facilitators.

Needless to say, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at YAAN! It has inspired me to get more creative again in my own free time, and has taught me about more styles and ideas beyond the ones I usually go with. I feel blessed to have a practicum where I am required to relax and practice self-care by art during my work time. Additionally, it has been a joy being able to meet with these young adults and teens each week, both to enjoy their conversation and to see their amazing creativity and artistic skills! I look forward to continuing with the group over the spring and summer.
