My Experience in the Rap Program: Jordan

I believe rap and hip hop culture are widely misunderstood today in general society; in my opinion, it is essential to speak about complex topics such as social and political justice. I love rap/ hip hop music and culture and was excited to have the opportunity to work with Bryan, the youth, and guest artists in this great program. The program consists of talented youth developing their rapping skills using cyphers, rapping acapella, and writing music to collaborate on different skills, including rap music culture. Antyx also has a hip hop dance program and breakdancing workshops; unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I did not have the chance to experience this aspect of the program. Regardless I perceived this program to be quite beneficial to youth with various ways to express themselves in a meaningful way while expanding their cognitive development using rap as an outlet for art which builds upon values of respect, social justice, peace, self-esteem, community development, and having fun.

Public speaking and stepping out of my comfort zone have never been my strong suit. I was able to participate by writing and reciting my written lyrics, which opened a new world of exploration that I could not have done without the encouragement and support Bryan and the youth give. It is a welcoming, positive environment encouraging youth to explore their feelings and then bring them out in spoken word. With education and bringing a sense of what rap culture is, Bryan brings social awareness surrounding many youths' issues today. I found that the youth enjoyed spending time doing something productive, which seemed to have a genuinely cathartic experience exploring their emotions. My overall experience was positive, giving me a real insight into what this program provides and how it helps develop unity and confidence through the lens of hip-hop. To Bryan, the youth, and the Antyx team, thank you for letting me be a part of this uplifting experience.
