Year 1 - Loop Genesis Sculpture Project: Rebuilding the Genesis Centre Sculptures with Our Community

In light of the recent news of the discovered remains of 215 missing children from Kamloops Residential School, we wish to acknowledge the deep pain and the re-living of the traumatic wounds that Indigenous peoples have endured for centuries. The impact of residential schools and colonialism is ongoing and it is becoming increasingly apparent to the larger population the need to be a part in active reconciliation, listen to those who are living intergenerational survivors, and to support their healing.

On our part, we would like to highlight the importance of doing this ongoing work and take the time to introduce to our youth and our communities Year 1 of the "Loop Genesis Sculpture Project: Rebuilding the Genesis Centre Sculptures with Our Community". This is a project we have been planning for over a year, and the space for healing and connection through cross-cultural sharing that this project creates is even more relevant today.

We are partnering with Diamond Willow Youth Lodge to bring you "Loop”, an arts-based social engagement project for youth and community members of Calgary’s North East Communities to help bridge the gap between cultures, generations, and our connection to the land. Year 1 is a year-long, four-seasons-focused hands-on research project rooted in the land we live on. Indigenous teachings of the land, cultural community exchanges and art workshops guided by Blackfoot Elder Pablo Russel, and professional local artists Ryan Willert, Alia Shahab, Lane Shordee, and Tamara Cardinal will contribute to the research and eventually the design of four new community sculptures to be created the following year at the Genesis Centre.

This project starts in SUMMER 2021 with an in-person summer camp running from July 12 to 16 (COVID-19 restrictions pending). There are limited spots available for our Youth Team so please get in touch to sign up! No prior art experience required. Email noor@antyx.org for more information about the project and the registration process.
