Introducing Jessica McCarthy!

My name is Jessica McCarthy and I am a second-year social work student at Mount Royal University. I have a life-long passion for the arts and can speak to the transformative nature of being involved in the arts community. I have a background in theatre (both in front of and behind the curtain), dance, choir and played a variety of musical instruments growing up. Some of my most cherished memories are of my time on stage. I have also worked with youth in various positions over the years and am always amazed by their creativity, passion and talent. Working with youth inspires me and is a great reminder to all of us to continue to live in the moment and share our talents with others. In my free time I love cooking delicious vegan food, exploring farmers markets, enjoying live theatre, dance and music events, and snuggling up on the couch with my little puppy Ellie. When I finish University, I plan to move to Victoria, British Colombia to start my career as a front-line mental health support worker.

If you were a superhero, what would your special power be?

If I had superpowers, I would want to be able to teleport. There are so many places I’d like to visit, and teleportation is a lot less expensive than buying airline tickets!

What was your first job?

When I was 11 or 12, I had a paper route. I remember my hands being covered in ink from rolling flyers around the paper and the sting from a few too many elastic bands snapping against my hands. After that, I worked at Calaway Park in the concession stands for two summers.

If you only had one day left to live, what would you do?

I would spend it with my family. My family means everything to me, and I would not be the person I am today or where I am today without the unconditional love and support they’ve shown me. I love them so much.

If the whole world was listening, what would you say?

Life isn’t about the things you have or the money you make, it’s about the people who you share it with and the memories you create together.

What indulgence would you enjoy if there were no consequences?

Pasta. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every day. I love pasta!

What are you looking forward to in your time with Antyx?

I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful organization! I am looking forward to discovering more about myself as an emerging practitioner and how I can incorporate my love for the arts as I begin my career. I believe that art and community are such powerful forces and there is so much to gain from being involved in programs like those offered at Antyx. I am also looking forward to gaining new perspectives from the youth. I am sure they have a lot to teach me and I am ready to learn from them!
